PATTERN 77 – 77 years of pattern design at MOME

Seventy-seven years of professional and educational heritage come into focus in the PATTERN 77 exhibition, which explores the history and impact of the printed textile design specialisation at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design. Through archival student work, portraits of educators, and a dedicated publication, it traces how the programme has shaped generations of designers. Since its founding in 1949, the specialisation has become one of the key hubs of Hungarian textile design, evolving from craft-based traditions towards industrial thinking and technological experimentation.

Created by the Textile Design programme, the exhibition spans the period from the 1950s with their agitprop printed motifs through to the years leading up to the political transition, presenting former students’ work decade by decade. At the same time, the showcase can be read as a history of MOME itself, introducing the artist-educators who defined the programme’s character over more than seven decades, from Ernő Schubert and Csaba Polgár through to the present, including Tünde Bényei and Viola Balázs.

PATTERN 77 is a retrospective exhibition accompanied by a card set drawn from selected archival material, offering a tangible way to engage with the collection and supporting the preservation and rethinking of its educational legacy.

Curatorial work on both the exhibition and the card set was carried out by printed textile designer Tünde Bényei DLA and textile designer and doctoral candidate Viola Balázs, with professional input from Judit Horváth PhD. The graphic design was created by Endre Földi, with support from programme coordinator Zsófia Asegu.

Developed within the MOME Textile Design programme, the project speaks to practitioners in the field, members of the university community, and wider audiences interested in design culture – anyone who see pattern design as a field with continuing relevance today.

A „Helyzet van!” programsorozat nemcsak beszélgetést indít, hanem konkrét válaszokat is keres arra, hogyan lehet biztonságosan és felelősen működni egyetemi közegben. Nem mindig egyértelmű, hogy egy helyzet „belefér-e”, vagy már határsértő. A MOME tavasszal indított kezdeményezése ezekhez kínál kapaszkodókat: hogyan működnek a szabályok a gyakorlatban, és hova lehet fordulni, ha kérdésed van. Folytatjuk dr.
