Moholy-Nagy Prize winner Imre Földes passes away
With an outlook far ahead of its time, he has contributed significantly to advancing the acceptance of crossover between artistic disciplines. He taught music by placing it within the wider context of cultural history, with particular emphasis on presenting the visual art, architectural, and cinematic movements of each era alongside its musical trends. Throughout his work, he consistently highlighted the fundamental role of music, acoustics, and space in the visual arts.
Generations were captivated by the intensity of his lectures, his personal charisma, and his extraordinary knowledge. His influence extended far beyond the university classroom. For decades, he “taught the entire country” through the Kossuth Radio programme Everyone’s Music School, while also reaching wide audiences as a lecturer at the József Attila Free University through his compelling public talks.
He was a music historian and music educator, author of several scientific and educational works and publications. In recognition of his outstanding work as an educator and his commitment to openness to different cultures, he received numerous prestigious accolades, including the Ferenc Erkel Prize, the Moholy-Nagy Award, the Artisjus Prize, the Grand Prize of the Music Section of the National Association of Hungarian Creative Artists, and, in 2016, the Prima Prize in the category of Hungarian education and public education.
Shortly after completing his studies at the Academy of Music, he taught elective music history courses between 1960 and 1974 at the predecessor of the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design. In 1965, he founded a chamber choir, which he led with great dedication for twelve years. Now known as the Momento Choir, the ensemble remains active to this day, and its founding conductor was still there to celebrate with them at last autumn’s anniversary concert.
The artistic and educational approach he passed on as a teacher remains especially important to our community. His intellectual legacy, dedication, and humanity continue to inspire and guide future generations.
His memory and legacy will hold a special place in our hearts.
