The head of MOME steps down, with the Board proposing Gábor Kopek as acting rector

Date: 2025.02.11
On 11 February 2025, the Senate of Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME) held a closed session to vote on the position of rector. As previously communicated, MOME Rector Pál Koós had stated that he would respect and accept the outcome of the confidence vote. The Foundation for Moholy-Nagy Art and Design, as MOME’s maintaining body and the employer of the university’s rector, has now received his resignation. Given that the university’s general deputy rector is also stepping down alongside its leader, the Foundation is seeking to prepare the process for the appointment of an acting rector.

The primary responsibilities of the acting rector will include fostering cohesion within the university community, facilitating dialogue to implement and refine the University of the Future programme – MOME’s roadmap for revitalisation – and overseeing the preparation and execution of the new rectorial application process.

The maintaining body considers it a priority for the acting rector to be a person of integrity and professional credibility with substantial experience in academic leadership, who is also widely recognised and respected within the university’s faculty, research, and staff communities.

Taking into account the unanimous recommendation of several Senate members, the Foundation has proposed photographer, media artist, university professor, former rector of MOME, and member of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees Gábor Kopek for the role.

As the Foundation sees the Senate’s backing and close collaboration with the university’s leadership as essential to this appointment, it has called for a formal vote on the acting rector’s appointment by the Senate.
