Hive inauguration and honey extraction: two new bee colonies added to the MOME Apiary

Established last year for ecological and educational purposes, the MOME Apiary has welcomed two new colonies: on 30 April, during Bee Day, the Mézengúz and Pempő families were added to the Tót and Mézga families, collectively benefitting the local ecosystem. The event was both a community celebration and a popular science educational experience, with participants able to harvest fresh fruit blossom honey.

As before, the new hives were crafted at the university’s Wood Workshop. The naming of the colonies, as in previous years, was left to the students. The hive inauguration was attended by staff and students, as well as local residents and children from the senior class of the Zugliget Kindergarten, who eagerly followed beekeeper Tamás Kutasi’s presentation and had a chance to observe the bees up close. The more daring ones were even invited to peek inside the hives.

Over the past year, the apiary has become an important part of MOME’s educational programme, gradually integrating into university life. A student from the Digital Object Design course is currently using data from the hive scales to create an installation, combining data visualisation with ceramic-printed artwork.

At MOME, sustainability is not just a part of the curriculum, but also a shared community experience. On 24 May, as part of the Budapest100 event, another beekeeping workshop will take place, and a campus garden tour will be offered, where participants can learn about the park’s transformation and discover its various plant species.

The forest of the future: the final of the Jump into the Future! competition has taken place

What happens when it is not adults, but secondary school students, who begin thinking about the future? Ten student teams presented their ideas at this year’s final, with participants reflecting together on the kinds of relationships that humans might develop with technology and nature twenty years from now. This year’s theme was the forest. The visions presented by the participants touched on climate change, urban life, automated systems, collective responsibility, and the possibility of reconnecting with nature. First prize from the jury went to Sketch Squad, with dECO taking second place and Erdei Remeték third. Seven special prizes were also awarded at the final, recognising the different strengths, approaches, and community values of the submissions.
